Did everything right. Thought that was the answer. Didn't know yet that doing everything right is just the beginning of harder questions.

Four years. A degree. Internships on the side. The conventional path assumes someone is covering the bill.

The degree costs something most people don't count. Juggling both, all the way through. Still made it out the other side.

Stable Job, Clear Trajectory
Entry-level role at a reputable organization. Medical or scientific track. Promotions ahead. Stay the course.
The Lab
3 Years in a Nobel Prize–Winning Lab
On paper, this was the dream. In practice, it was training for a test that doesn't account for how some people learn. The MCAT was a wall. The wall was information: I am kinesthetic, auditory, visual. I have to be hands-on.

Relationship, engagement, marriage. The personal track mirrors the professional one: milestones, in order, on schedule.
The Real Education Begins
Hotel Concierge → Catering Sales
Quit the lab. Got connected to hospitality. Learned to solve problems fast, read people, think on my feet — better training than anything with a syllabus. Loved catering sales. Then the pay structure worked against me from day one. Got laid off. Onward.

Stability
Buy a Home, Build Equity
The 30-year plan. A fixed address. The pandemic was a blip. Come out the other side with the same trajectory, maybe a sourdough starter.
Equinox + The Pandemic
Gyms Closed. I Drove to National Parks.
Found lifestyle and wellness at Equinox. Then gyms were the first thing to go. Loaded my SUV with my dog, drove from Dallas through national parks, slept in the car. As a woman, alone. It was the most free I had ever felt.

Start a Family
Children, eventually. The next generation. A house that becomes a home. The calendar fills up with school plays and soccer practices.
Finding Home
Uber Eats → Car Sales → Seattle
Couldn't cross into Canada to reach my brother in Alaska. Turned west instead. Drove into Seattle and knew. Did what it took to stay: delivering food, then selling cars. Loved car sales. Retail hours make work-life integration hard. Kept moving.

Advancement
Climb the Ladder
Manager role. Director role. The title track. Performance reviews. Five-year plans. The goal is always one rung higher.
The Real Education
Van Across the U.S. + Vietnam
Road trip with my partner — across the country, then to Vietnam. My motherland. My parents' origin. I didn't know it until I stood in it. Then through the desert southwest, caring for a family member post-surgery. Some things you only understand by going.
Formative
Reward
Promotion. Recognition. Repeat.
The system rewards those who wait their turn. Patience is a virtue. Eventually, the corner office. Or something like it.
Philanthropy + Ikigai
Kept Getting Denied. Started Drawing Circles.
Landed in philanthropy. Loved the mission. Got passed over for promotions repeatedly. Used ikigai to map what I actually wanted — the intersection of love, skill, need, and sustainability. The answer wasn't in any org chart.
The Turning Point
Destination
Retirement Plan. Finish Line.
401k. Mortgage paid off. Maybe grandchildren. A life measured in accumulated stability. You did everything right.
Now
Founded Summer Camp Project
Started my own nonprofit. Sending kids to summer camp who couldn't otherwise go — because I was one of those kids, at 13, on scholarship. The ikigai circles kept overlapping until there was only one thing in the middle. This is it.
